This screen shot is for Week 5 Workshop 5 Information Management 29/3/07
This week involved going on to the net and Adding some favourite websites into folders. Then putting a screen shot of our favourite websites into our blog. I had two folders one in which I put things that I love ie Frizzle Chooks and Siamese cats and the other one things that relate to uni courses ie Building Materials of the future.

After reading "Negroponte's famous "being digital". It defines the hard and soft digital storage systems as atoms for hard copy i.e. paper, laptops, computers and bits as soft copy i.e. info on screen, commands you can ask you computer to perform, email messaging. It made me think what the pro and cons are about the digital information storage systems opposed to traditional books.

The advantages of the digital information storage systems are, you don't have heavy parcels being shipped around the world at quite considerable expense. The delivery of information by digital technology is almost instant. Corrections can be made without physically changing anything. Information that is on websites is very recent and can be updated at a faster rate than books, which need to be rewritten and republished which can take a couple of years.

Particularly for me, I find reading off the screen really difficult. Reading books is a much more relaxing activity than reading off screen. Curling up on a sofa reading is a special pleasure. Books are much easier to look through. You don't need batteries or electricity to read them.

I found this article really interesting, it was fascinating to read someones point of view using an unusual concept of explanation.

This weeks lecture and notes were basically about different types of information file formats. The article we read used átoms and bits' to describe software and hardware. The article talked about advantages and disadvantages of each.

Lecture also gave info on how to organize and retrieve information from your computer using
i) file extensions
ii) folders/directories
iii) search functions
iv) search engines

The bulletins seem to be just people's personal views and opinions. The keywords I put in originally ie Siamese cats were highlighted all through the text.

Went into the podcasts hosting sites. Entered Siamese Cats and there were several sites that I could have listened to, but didnt have speakers at the Megalab. Probably just as well considering the noise they make.

Advantages of Podcast Technology

1. Easier access to learning by remote and isolated students.
2. Students have the ability to study whether they live in Marble Bar or Perth
3. Better access to higher learning by a great deal more people.
4. Students don't have to relocate to larger regionals areas or cities to improve their skills and get better careers.

I skimmed through the reading content for this week.
The first article on Email Do's and Don'ts was about making your messages more efficient and effective. The tips were very good. The article on Essential Email Etiquette", on how to avoid common mistakes when writing your emails was also very interesting.

Updating my blogger ready for week4 Informal Check

I was busy in week 3 class preparing a power point presentation, something I have always been very impressed by but never thought I would get a chance to try. After much thought I have decided to do Johnny Depp.

How I am going to GIve a Good Talk
Know Your Audience - I picked Depp, because the older people in the class would know of him back in 21 Jump Street Days and the younger students are familiar with his Jack Sparrow role in Pirates.
Use relevant examples ......Characters of Johnny Depp cover a broad range for the audience. (older and more recent movies)
Keep It Simple
Reinforce the Idea
Review Your Main Points and
Close Off effectively

My power point display will be very simple, as I am new to the technology and I dont want anything to go wrong in my presentation.

Week 3 Accessing Knowledge-Workshop 3 Presentation Skills

Spent till 11.30pm last night working on my graphs and charts, but saved it on my USB and just finished transferring to my blog......actually quite pleased with myself. Today I am working on presentation skills. I have found a picture of a siamese cat that I would like to practise putting into my blog using imageshack because I am still a bit hesitant about performing that function.

2nd Week of Uni Prep Course - Accessing Knowledge

Had a bit of trouble locating my blog, (left my notes at home from previous class so that didnt help). Did a lot of work in Wednesday class 7/3/07. But saved it to my usb so hoping I can just transfer it today. Cross Fingers!!
Todays class was all about Application Skills, being everday things we might do on the computer and all the applications that we use to get there. The most common PC's tasks are Handling and Storing Files, Word Processing, Spreadsheets,Internet Access, Reading and Writing Emails. We use a variety of applications to achieve these things ie Windows Explorer, Word, Excel, Power Point, Internet Explorer, Outlook.
